The 32-year-old son of actor and kung fu star Jackie Chan has been arrested in Beijing on drugs charges, as authorities clamp down on celebrity offenders.

Police say they detained Jaycee Chan, who is originally from Hong Kong and also an actor, as well as Kai Ko, a 23-year-old Taiwanese actor, during a raid on Thursday in Dongcheng district, the city's commercial and cultural center, state media, citing Beijing police, said Tuesday.

Both men tested positive for marijuana.

Police later found more than 100 grams of the drug after searching Chan's apartment. He was also accused of "hosting others to take drugs," the state-run China Daily said. He could face three years in jail under Chinese law.

State broadcaster CCTV aired footage of Chan, his face blurred, showing police where the drugs were hidden at his home, while Ko was shown making a tearful apology.

"I very much regret about what happened. I'm very sorry to those who support me, like me or even know me personally," he said. "I just want to tell them I'm really sorry. I've set the worst example, which had the most terrible influence. And this is a huge mistake."

Celebrity targets

The two actors are being seen as the targets of the capital's latest anti-drugs campaign, which has seen more than 7,000 people detained for using drugs, a 72% year-on-year increase, according to the China Daily.

Celebrities are increasingly in the spotlight, with a number of high-profile arrests over drug-related incidents in recent months, including popular movie actor Zhang Mo and singer Li Daimo, who was actually sentenced to nine months in jail for hosting a crystal meth party at his home, according to the China Daily.

Earlier this month, dozens of management agencies representing performers in the entertainment industry signed an agreement with Beijing authorities banning drug use from the industry and pledging to sack artists who break the law.

The elder Chan, who has starred in a number of Hollywood movies including "Rush Hour" and "The Karate Kid," has actually campaigned against drug use, and was named an anti-drugs ambassador in China in 2009.

The family Anria Galang a 26-year-old gang rape and murder victim in Calumpit, Bulacan expressed dismay over the progress of the case, as the jeepney driver tagged as the third suspect may be released.

A report on Unang Balita on Tuesday August 19, 2014 said the family fears that Elmer Joson, the jeepney driver who was arrested at the wake of Anria Espiritu, will be able to get out of jail within 36 hours since he hasn't been charged.

Charges have yet to be filed because of weak evidence, especially since the witness who can counter Joson's claims has backed out, the report said.

Two other suspects had earlier been arrested and interrogated, but they haven't been seen by the family, the Unang Balita report added.

According to a separate report on 24 Oras on Monday night, Joson and his wife attended the wake after he received news of her death, saying the victim was his passenger last Wednesday evening.

Espiritu was found dead on Thursday, naked and with multiple stab wounds.

The victim's family grew suspicious upon seeing claw marks and wounds on Joson's body when he attended the wake, the 24 Oras report said.

Supt. Ophelio Dakila Concina, chief of Calumpit police, said some wounds on the driver's body had already partially healed, while scratches on his neck were still fresh.

Oscar-winning actor and comedian Robin Williams apparently took his own life at his Northern California home Monday, law enforcement officials said. Williams was 63.

"He has been battling severe depression of late," his media representative Mara Buxbaum told CNN. "This is a tragic and sudden loss. The family respectfully asks for their privacy as they grieve during this very difficult time."

Coroner investigators suspect "the death to be a suicide due to asphyxia," according to a statement from the Marin County, California, Sheriff's office.

Williams married graphic designer Susan Schneider in Napa Valley, California, ceremony in October 2011. Schneider sent a written statement to CNN through the representative.

Word of Williams' death stunned the entertainment community Monday.

Comedian Steve Martin tweeted, "I could not be more stunned by the loss of Robin Williams, mensch, great talent, acting partner, genuine soul."

Former CNN host Larry King said he would he remember Williams as "a genuine caring guy.  Not just a funny man, but a guy who cared about people."

Marin County deputies responded to an emergency call from Williams' home in unincorporated Tiburon, California, at 11:55 a.m., reporting "a male adult had been located unconscious and not breathing," the release from the sheriff said.

Williams was pronounced dead at 12:02 p.m., it said.

Williams was last seen alive at his home, where he lives with his wife, at about 10 a.m., the sheriff's statement said.

"An investigation into the cause, manner and circumstances of the death is currently underway by the Investigations and Coroner Divisions of the Sheriff's Office," the sheriff's statement said.

"Coroner Division suspects the death to be a suicide due to asphyxia, but a comprehensive investigation must be completed before a final determination is made."

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday, the sheriff said.

Williams made at least two trips to rehab for drug treatment, including a visit this summer, and he underwent heart surgery in 2009.

Williams, born in Chicago on July 21, 1951, studied theater at Juilliard School before taking his stand up act to nightclubs. He was cast as Mork, an alien visitor to Earth, for a 1974 episode of television's "Happy Days."

The role led to the spin-off show "Mork & Mindy," which showcased Williams' usual comic improvisation talents.

He proved his dramatic acting skills in "Good Will Hunting," a 1997 film that earned him a best supporting actor Oscar.

Williams credited the influence of Jonathan Winters' comic irreverence and quirky characters as a great influence on his comedy. The connection between the two was completed when Winters was cast as Williams' son on "Mork & Mindy."

When Winters died in 2012, Williams said he was "my idol, then he was my mentor and amazing friend." He tweeted that Winters was his "Comedy Buddha."

Williams' fans can look forward to four more movie appearances coming to theaters, including another installment in the "Night at the Museum" franchise.

The film, set for a December release, has Williams reprising the Teddy Roosevelt role he delivered in the first two comedies.

Warning: Solar Superstorm could Destroy Earth at any moment

It is “only a matter of time” before a catastrophic eruption on the surface of the sun hurtles towards the planet with devastating consequences.

The Earth could be the target of an explosion equivalent to “10 billion Hiroshima bombs exploding at the same time”.

It has emerged crisis meetings have been held to discuss how to limit the damage of solar superstorms which present a “long-lasting” threat to all forms of life.

Scientists warn communication systems will be crippled, vital services such as transport, sanitation and medicine will close, and loss of power will plunge the planet into darkness.

Ashley Dale, member of international task force SolarMAX set up to identify the risks of a solar storm, said: “Without power, people would struggle to fuel their cars at petrol stations, get money from cash dispensers or pay online.

“Water and sewage systems would be affected too, meaning that health epidemics in urbanised areas would quickly take a grip, with diseases we thought we had left behind centuries ago soon returning.”

The warning comes as Britain is experiencing one of the hottest summers on record. Scientists have warned of "highly unusual activity" on the surface of the sun which has already sent smaller solar flares spiralling towards earth.

Solar storms are triggered when coronal mass ejections (CMEs) from the sun tear into the earths magnetic field ripping it apart.

This triggers huge surges of electrical currents which lead to widespread power outages and destroy machinery which use electricity.

Mr Dale, currently writing a doctorate on aerospace engineering at Bristol University, said it is only a “matter of time” before a violent solar storm smashes into Earth.

He warned the planet is facing a repeat of the devastating solar superstorm of 1859 - dubbed the Carrington Event after English astronomer Richard Carrington.

Carrington spotted a solar flare before terrifying fireballs hurtled across the atmosphere making people think it was the end of the world.

Reports followed of sparks showering from telegraph machines, out of control fires and electrical operators being injured.

Around 10^22 kJ of energy catapulted around a trillion kilos of charged particles towards the Earth at speeds of up to 1,900 miles per second.
Mr Dale said a solar superstorm could cause around £1.5 TRILLION of damage across the globe, wiping out communication systems and transport networks.

He said: “We have begun to realise these superstorms are large enough to cause serious damage and they happen quite often relatively speaking.

“It is only now, when we are so dependant on technology, that we are so vulnerable, and one is overdue by about five years.

“We are looking at a major major event, it sounds like scaremongering but we’re not, there are very serious implications.”

Its impact on civilised life was relatively small as there was less reliance on electronics, a similar event now would be nothing short of catastrophic.

In the journal Physics World Mr Dale claims an event which will have a serious impact on the world is inevitable.

NASA scientists say Carrington-level event happens every 150 years with the next one currently five years overdue.

The likelihood of one occurring in the next decade is as high as 12 per cent, they added.

Scientists from SolarMAX gathered at the International Space University in France where they concluded advanced space-weather forecasting is the best solution.
This would give around a week’s notice of where and when solar storms will take place and exactly how bad they will be,

When the warning is given vulnerable power lines will be switched off, satellites re-orientated in space and planes will be grounded.

Mr Dale said: “As a species, we have never been more vulnerable to the volatile mood of our nearest star, but it is well within our ability, skill and expertise as humans to protect ourselves.”

The warning from scientists will send shivers down the spine of astronomers who told of the recent Blood Moon which was said to prophesise a huge event that could strike down mankind.

The total lunar eclipse that turned the moon a dark blood red in April this year was said to be a 'sign' from God and fulfilled a prophecy foretold in the bible, a church claimed.

Pastor John Hagee, whose book Four Blood Moons sparked worldwide interest in the phenomenon, said it was now too late for mankind to prevent a 'huge' event that would change humanity forever.

Paul George will be hospitalized in three days
Indiana Pacers all-star forward Paul George had successful surgery to repair an open tibia-fibula fracture in his right leg early Saturday morning in Las Vegas, according to a statement released by USA Basketball.

George suffered the injury a few hours earlier during a Team USA intrasquad scrimmage at UNLV’s Thomas and Mack Center and brought a sobering end to the game and a week-long training session in preparation for the FIBA World Cup.

After leaving the arena on a stretcher, with rattled teammates looking on in shock and fans applauding, George was rushed to Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas, where he immediately underwent surgery. Dr. David Silverberg, Dr. Joseph Yu and Riley Williams, team physician for USA Basketball and the Brooklyn Nets, were present for the procedure.

George is expected to remain hospitalized for three days.

With 9 minutes, 33 seconds left in the game, George contested a layup by Houston Rockets all-star guard James Harden. George leaped in front of Harden and stretched out his right leg, which immediately bent perpendicular to his body after his foot crashed into the bottom of the basket stanchion. The stanchion at Thomas and Mack Center is much closer to the baseline than NBA arenas which likely contributed to the gruesome injury, providing little room for a safe landing.

George’s teammates were visibly upset as medical staffers tended to him. Some looked away. Others buried their heads in towels or their hands. At one point, the players and coaches huddled to pray for George. After a nearly 10-minute delay, the game was called with George’s Blue team losing 81-71 to the White team.

“Thanks everybody for the love and support,” George wrote on Twitter. “I’ll be ok and be back better than ever!!! Love y’all!!”

NBA executives have debated for years the merits of having the game’s best players participating in international competitions. Pacers general manager Kevin Pritchard traveled to the hospital with George’s parents. Pacer team president Larry Bird issued a statement that read in part, “We are obviously greatly concerned. At this time our thoughts and prayers are with Paul.”

A two-time all-star who led the Pacers to the best record in the Eastern Conference and the conference finals last season, George was expected to make the 12-man roster. He didn’t have any previous international experience but was a candidate to start alongside league most valuable player Kevin Durant. Durant, George and Harden had concluded the last two practices by playing one-on-one games and developing chemistry.

“We all just want to get better,” George explained after Thursday’s practice. “We all love the game of basketball. It’s another opportunity to get better and work on some things and improve on things going into next season.”

Team USA has won the past four international basketball competitions but has lost several talented players in recent weeks. All-stars Russell Westbrook, Blake Griffin, Kevin Love and LaMarcus Aldridge and NBA Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard recently withdrew from the competition.

George’s injury brought back images of former Louisville player Kevin Ware, whose leg snapped during the 2013 NCAA Tournament. Krzyzewski was coaching Duke in that game against Louisville.

“Anything can happen anywhere, a lot of things happen,” Krzyzewski said. “Tonight it happened during a basketball game. We need to take care of that. It doesn’t mean it’ll happen again and again and again; it means that it happened right now. And we need to take care of right now appropriately and then move on.”
